FIRST THING'S LAST

Have you ever said to yourself, "I'm going to read the whole Bible from the beginning to the end."? You started in Genesis, then after a few chapters, you got confused? Then after much frustration you end up quitting? Has this ever happened to you? For me, I had to start with the chapters about Jesus. I started with what was pulling me the most. The same principle applies with writing. A lot of people finally make the decision to start writing, but they make the mistake of starting with Chapter 1 rather than the chapter they Love the most.

"Do not start writing chapter one - to do so makes the book writing look like an impossibly steep climb, and it is hard to get started."
~ Dan Poynter, Self-Publishing Guru

This is what I did. I first got all of my chapter titles (which were subject to change). I gathered them all together and I decided to start writing the one that I felt the most passion for. Which chapter was I anxious to write? Which one is the most fun? After I picked the chapter that interested me the most, I started writing. Then once I completed that chapter, I picked the next most interesting one...and so on...and so on. Once I completed all of the chapters, then I put them in the order of importance. This process is called 'Non-Linear Writing'. When you try to start writing from the 'Introduction' to the 'Conclusion', you're going to struggle. And you may not even get passed the first chapter. Many people struggle with the first chapter, because they wrote it first. They get stuck; they get frustrated; then they eventually end up procrastinating again. Don't allow this to happen!

"The last thing one discovers in writing a book is what to put first."
~ Blaise Pascal

When you take this approach, you will usually find yourself writing the 'Introduction' or Chapter 1 last, because it's pretty much just introducing the book. So Here's What You Need to Do:

1. Write out the title of the chapters for your book. Remember, the chapter titles will probably change. You just need to know the subject you'll be discussing in that chapter.

2. Once you gather all of the chapters, start writing the most interesting one first.

3. Once you've finished writing the last chapter (which is probably the Introduction), put them in the proper order. Once you've finished all of the chapters, you'll know what needs to go after the other.

start small, START BIG - Just Start

I had to walk 'in' faith in order to walk 'out' of the job. Stepping out of the workplace required stepping out in faith. I put in my notice and quit my job to pursue my vision. Was there any fear? Sure there was. But fear comes with pursuing your vision and chasing your dreams. Why? Because your vision, your dreams, the life that you want is just outside of your comfort zone. So here I was. I didn't have a job. I didn't have a prospect job. And I didn't have much money. But one thing I know I had for sure. I had plenty of 'time'.

I needed to take advantage of all of this extra time. I didn't want to waste it. When you don't plan for your increase, the world finds a way to plan it for you. In other words, before I start using my time for something else, let me dedicate my time for writing.

"You don't need to have much to start. You just need to start with what you have."

So I sat down to write. This shouldn't be a problem, because I was already writing Newsletters to some of my partners. But when I sat down to write the book, it seemed to be difficult. All of a sudden, for the first time, writing was hard. And the little paragraph that I wrote was horrible. I couldn't understand why. Then God revealed it to me. I had to get a revelation that there's a big difference between 'writing' and 'editing'. The reason that many people put off writing is because they're trying to 'write' and 'edit' at the same time. This will never work! This will cause you to procrastinate. You'll say for years, "Yes, I'm going to write a book..." but never put anything down on paper. You just need to start 'writing'. You can't worry about correct grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, correct spelling, etc. You just need to start filling the pages. And once you fill the pages up, then you can go back and 'edit'. Judging yourself while writing can be one of your biggest hinderances. Just write freely, then go back and put the pieces together.

"Writing has to come first."
~ Sue Grafton

So that's what I did. I dedicated three hours a day to writing. Sometimes I would write for an hour and a half, take a 30 minute break, then edit for the last hour. Sometimes I would just write for the whole three hours. The most important thing was I got started. What about you? How long have you been saying that you're going to write a book? Have you started writing it yet? You may be thinking, "But Billie, I don't have three hours to write..." Then dedicate two hours; dedicate one hour; dedicate 30 minutes...you just need to start. start small, START BIG - Just Start.
